Movement Architects

The Black Eldering Bill of Rights was conceptualized by the Sankofa Elders Project Ambassadors of Los Angeles County. Convened by Sistahs Aging with Grace & Elegance and California Black Women’s Health Project, the Sankofa Elders Project is an Equity Community Organizing (ECO) Group funded by the SCAN Foundation and California Health Care Foundation to advance health equity in aging.

About Sistahs Aging with Grace & Elegance

Sistahs Aging with Grace & Elegance (SAGE Sistahs) is a movement to honor, celebrate and support African-American women as we transition into our Golden Years. As one of the only organizations in California specifically dedicated to Black women and aging, SAGE Sistahs was born out of a desire to build an aging support network informed by the unique history, needs and lived experiences of African-American women.

Our goal is to enhance the aging experience for African-American women by providing education, resources and tools to empower women to make intentional life choices for thriving at every stage of the aging journey.

About California Black Women's Health Project

California Black Women's Health Project (CABWHP) is the only statewide, non-profit organization that is solely committed to improving the health of California's 1.2 million Black women and girls through advocacy, education, outreach and policy.

In partnership with Sistahs Aging With Grace & Elegance (SAGE Sistahs), CABWHP hosts sisterhood and self-care seminars to honor the Elders in our community and change the narrative on aging for Black Women. CABWHP and Sage Sistahs seek to create a culturally responsive community to support the unique aging journey of Black women in California.

The Sankofa ECO-Group is driven by an intergenerational, group of Sankofa Elders,
Black elders, and community members who are committed and passionate health equity and the well-being of Black elders.

  • The SCAN Foundation

The SCAN Foundation envisions a society where all of us can age well with purpose. The SCAN Foundation pursues this vision by igniting bold and equitable changes in how older adults age in both home and community. The Foundation prioritizes communities that have been historically marginalized with an emphasis on: older people of color; older adults with lower incomes (duals, near duals, and lower-middle income — below 400 percent of the federal poverty level); and older residents of geographically underserved areas.

  • California Health Care Foundation

The California Health Care Foundation is an independent, nonprofit philanthropy that works to improve the health care system so that all Californians have the care they need. CHCF focuses especially on making sure the system works for Californians with low incomes and for communities who have traditionally faced the greatest barriers to care.

  • Metta Fund

Metta Fund is a private, San Francisco-based health foundation. Through grantmaking and community partnerships, Metta Fund works to advance the health and wellbeing of older adults.
