Black Elders Deserve the Right to Age in Place in Elder-Affirming Neighborhoods
PRINCIPLE #5 OF THE BLACK ELDERING BILL OF RIGHTS
Housing is a fundamental right of Black Elders.
Black Elders deserve to live in safe, secure, affordable, and accessible housing that is conducive to their mental and physical needs and wellbeing.
Black Elders at risk-of or experiencing houselessness deserve to have access to transitional and permanent supportive housing that enables them to live in safety, comfort, and dignity.
Black Elders living with physical disabilities deserve to have accessible and accommodating housing that enables them to safely and securely age in place and community.
Black Elders deserve to live in environmentally friendly neighborhoods and communities with close or transportation-accessible proximity to amenities, services, and resources (e.g. medical care, legal services, healthy food, arts & culture, etc...).
Small non-corporate landlords who provide safe, stable, clean, and high quality affordable and under market-rate housing to Black Elders deserve the right to publicly funded subsidies and grants that provide financial assistance for property renovations and accessibility accommodations for their older adult tenants.
Black Elders have a homestead right to develop intergenerational housing, villages, and other cooperative living that honors Black-and-African centered culture, heritage, customs, and traditions that support their wellbeing and belonging.
